INVEST Fair 2018

2

The folks over at ShareInvestor (a subsidiary of SPH) recently reached out to me regarding the marketing of INVEST Fair 2018. As readers may know, Financial Horse is a huge believer in the power of knowledge and the exposure to many differing points of view, and I’ve always believed that we are all the richer for it. So, I was very pleased to be able to help out in the publicity of INVEST Fair 2018.

Basics: INVEST Fair 2018

INVEST Fair 2018 is an annual investor event organised by Share Investor, which is itself a subsidiary of SPH. To quote them:

“First started in 2007, INVEST Fair is ShareInvestor’s annual flagship event with the purpose to showcase products and services in the market, to act as a meeting point for investors and traders alike and to keep the attendees abreast with the latest market outlook.”

So basically, it’s the Investing equivalent of the PC Show, to be held at Suntec City Hall 405 to 406 from Saturday 25 August to Sunday 26 August, where the highlight is the talks by the various personalities.

I’ve set out the floor plan below, you can check out their website for more info.

Highlight: Which talk would Financial Horse go for?

There is little doubt that the highlight of the fair is the talks. Unfortunately they are spread over 2 days, and there is no way I am going down to Suntec over 2 days. In fact now that I think about it, I’ll probably head down on either 25 or 26 Aug, listen to a couple of talks, walk around the booths for a bit, and have a nice meal at Suntec. I suppose that’s exactly the appeal of Suntec REIT these days, because they have a good, solid method of drawing crowds to their mall. But I digress.

I’ve found that when attending such talks, it’s less about the topic in question, and more about the personality and knowledge of the speaker. When going through the INVEST Fair list of speakers, there were a few persons who caught my attention:

Anton Kreil – This guy is unbelievable, he’s basically a genius child trader who retired after 7 years on Wall Street. Okay he made a ton of money from 2000 to 2007 in what was the golden days of trading before Central Banks destroyed volatility, but none of that detracts from the fact that this guy is a true baller. His profile, from his own company webpage, is pretty self-explanatory.

Anton is the Managing Partner of the Institute of Trading and Portfolio Management, an independent global community of 425 Traders across 22 countries. Anton manages and oversees the Institute Community, the Institute parent company’s (Jakubstadt Holdings) global portfolio (as Managing Partner) via Corporate trading accounts from Singapore and his own long-term investments outside the Institute (Non- Disclosed Total Exposure).

Anton has had a distinguished career as a Professional Trader in the Financial Markets. He opened his first trading account when he was sixteen and traded profitably through the tech boom in the late nineteen nineties. He was the first person out of four hundred students in his Economics undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester to receive a formal job offer from an Investment Bank trading desk. Goldman Sachs saw his track record and hired him on an “unconditional offer”, meaning Goldman Sachs contractually stated that he could get any mark in his degree and they would still hire him as a Professional Trader. He completed the infamous Goldman Sachs Analyst Program (2000) and Associate Program (2002) in New York, which has been responsible for training a disproportionately large amount of the world’s best Investment Bank and Hedge Fund Traders of the last thirty Years.

In June 2008 Anton was chosen by the BBC to appear in the British TV series Million Dollar Traders which was aired in 2009. The show went global shooting Anton from relative obscurity into the limelight. In response to the thousands of messages Anton received from around the world asking him to teach trading, he decided to go on the road and set up the Institute of Trading and Portfolio Management in 2011. The Institute has now grown into the world’s leading trading education company boasting a community of highly trained and educated Retail Traders that can trade from anywhere in the world. This has enabled Anton through the Institutes parent company to deploy capital to many of the Institutes traders, who now make a living from trading at the Institute.

Anton has always been known in the industry for his obsession with Financial Markets, his insane work ethic and for his ability to teach up and coming new talent in the Industry.

His keynote session is on Saturday from 10:30am – 11.15am on Topic – Acquiring a Systematic Professional Trader Process at Seminar Room 3.

Tam Ging Wien – This dude runs ProButterfly.com, which I’ve been following for a while and quite appreciate his depth of analysis. We’ve also chatted virtually a couple of times, and he seems like a great dude, so I would love to be able to meet him in person and hear him air his views.

Tam Ging Wien has been an avid equities and real estate investor for over 10 years.

He is the founder of ProButterfly.com, an independent investment site that focuses on general investment themes with focus on equities and REITs. His passion for financial education and training stems from a desire to help others help themselves achieve financial freedom. In 2017 he published his first book entitled REITs to Riches: Everything You Need to Know About Investing Profitably in REITs.

Roger Montgomery – On paper, he does have a great CV and seems like he would be able to share a ton of unconventional insights. He’s doing a panel discussion on Saturday on “Market Uncertainties are Back; What’s Next?”, so that’s probably the best way to listen to his insights. Otherwise, his keynote session is on Saturday from 2:45pm – 3:15pm on Boom or Bust: Signposts to Investor Returns in the next 18 months at Seminar Room 4.

Roger Montgomery is the founder, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Montgomery Investment Management a Sydney and New York-based global investment manager with $1.5bn under management. He is a renowned value investor with more than 25 years’ experience. Following a successful career as an analyst and public company Chairman, Roger published the First Edition of his stock market guide, Value.able, in 2010, becoming a best seller in just 16 weeks. He is an awarded presenter on the subject of investing, appears weekly in the media and press and has so for over 15 years.

Qi Wang – Not every reader is going to agree with me on this, but I have been fascinated by the Chinese equities market for a while now. There are many reports that show that the Chinese equities market is primarily driven by retail investors, while western markets are primarily driven by institutional investors. With retail investors, many are far less sophisticated, so there is greater room to outperform if you know what you are doing. At the same time, there’s no getting away from politics in China, so while traditional investing principles apply, it is vital to understand the political undertones in play. It’s a very interesting dynamic, and I would be interested to see what the Chinese speakers have to say, especially at the panel discussion.

Qi Wang is responsible for providing investment research and solutions to global institutional clients. The MegaTrust Investments Group is a research driven, boutique fund manager specializing in Chinese equities. The group was founded in Shanghai, China in 2007 and has US$600 million under management today, with one of the best long-term track records in the industry.

Prior to joining MegaTrust, Qi was the Head of China Index Research at MSCI Inc., a global index and analytics solutions provider. He advised the world’s leading asset owners on global investing, asset allocation, portfolio construction, and risk management etc. In 2014, Qi and his colleagues produced ground-breaking research on factor investing (smart beta) for the Government Pension Investment Fund of Japan (GPIF). He also led research and consultation on the inclusion of China A-shares in the emerging markets index, making him a highly regarded expert on the globalization of A-shares (domestic Chinese stocks).

He graduated from Dartmouth College with a double-degree in mathematics and electrical engineering in 1997. Qi has been a CFA charterholder since 2003.

I’ve set out the full schedule of talks below, with the persons that I am keen to listen to bolded below. There are 3 clusters of timings for me, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, or Sunday late afternoon. I don’t have a particular preference as to which talk I like the most, so I’ll probably have a look at my schedule closer to the date and pick the timing that best suits me.

  1. Hi,
Do you have views on the other speakers? whether positive or negative or neutral?
Margaret Yang, Dr Tee, Spencer Li, Dr Daniel Kao, CK Ee, Kelvin Wong.

We are also seeing more on blockchain and crypto exhibitors. Do you have any views on these new forms of investments? Granted, most if not all of them are not regulated.

    • I’ve never met some of them before, and I want to reserve negative judgment until I’ve had the chance to see them in person. I’ve met Dr Tee before though, and I’m not a fan of his, I find his methods a mere variant of technical analysis.

On block chain, I think the fundamental technology behind block chain will change the world. As an investment though, it’s hard to know which would be the winner 10 years from now. It’s worth a small punt, but I wouldn’t put in significant sums unless I had inside knowledge on this, for eg, if I knew the founder.
