A quick note on investing in 2018

8

Dear Readers,

As this year draws to a close, I wanted to pen a heartfelt note to each and every one of you. 2018 has been a landmark year for Financial Horse. Financial Horse was founded in February 2018, and has quickly grown into a leading investment and personal finance website in Singapore. Our Facebook Group has surpassed 3500 members, the Facebook page has crosses 1800 likes, and the site regularly achieves 50,000 to 100,000 monthly views.

Yet none of this would have been possible without you guys. I started Financial Horse to provide clear, no bullshit, investment advice for Singapore investors. Yet the outpouring of knowledge and sharing from the community has blown me away. I started out on this journey wanting to share my thoughts, but in the process, I ended up learning so much more from you guys. Just listening to your feedback, your comments, your criticism on my articles has taught me so much about investing, and I end off the year only beginning to appreciate how much more there is to learn in my, in our, investing journey.

Impact of Technology

No discussion on 2018 will be complete without a brief note on technology. The impact of technology and access to information in financial markets today is unprecedented. Across all asset classes, I’m finding that tried and tested investment strategies that used to work in the past, no longer work today.

2018 was a supremely tough year in investing that perfectly encapsulated these trends. Algorithmic trading has dramatically increased the speed at which financial markets move, and the complex quant models that power these algorithms have resulted in the financial markets sending new and unprecedented signals to investors. The net result of these, is that the market is becoming more and more efficient, and it’s becoming increasingly hard to generate alpha (returns that outperform the indexes).

Of course, the impact of technology isn’t confined to investing. Across all industries, from real estate to transportation to hospitality, we see how technology is disrupting existing, established practices. What has worked in the past, will no longer work in the future, and companies who stubbornly cling to the ways of the old, will watch as the world passes them by in just a few years.

In this fast-paced and ever-changing climate, I truly believe that a keen sense of intellectual curiosity, open mindedness, flexibility to change, and the boldness to bet big and with conviction, are more important than ever.

Suggestions for content on Financial Horse

But leaving all that aside, I am looking forward to a bigger and better 2019, with better written, better researched, and even more insightful articles than 2018.

To kickstart the year, I wanted to reach out to each and every one of you to understand the kind of articles that you want to see on Financial Horse in 2019. It can be a stock that you want to learn more about, how to use CPF, how to go about asset allocation, how to invest in derivatives, or just about anything investment / personal finance related at all. No matter how silly you may think it is, just drop me a note, because I want to hear from every one of you, and absolutely nothing is too silly in my book.

Drop me an email at [email protected], and rest assured that over this festive period, I will be taking the chance to read through each and every suggestion received.

Here’s wishing each and every one of you a truly amazing Christmas, and a fabulous 2019. 2018 was a tough year in investing, but all that’s behind us now. 2019 is a completely new year, and whatever new challenges await, I look forward to facing them with you guys.

Till next time, Financial Horse, signing out!

  1. Hello, really enjoy your articles – May you go from strength to strength! Would welcome more writing on building a strong and diversified income portfolio, I believe this is of great interest not just to me but a substantial portion of the Singapore individual investor community. To start with, it would be great to hear from you on Keppel KBS REIT. Happy holidays and a great year ahead.

    • Thank you for your kind words! Yes I enjoy writing on portfolio construction as well, will try to get more of those.

Haha I’m planning to do a Keppel KBS REIT article in the coming weeks. I really like it at the current prices. Stay tuned!

      Happy Holidays to you!

  2. You have no idea how important your advice is for people who want to protect their wealth. Long story short – savior! Thank you very much and have a wonderful Christmas.

    • Thank you for the kind words! If there are any topics you want my thoughts on just drop me a comment/email! I’m always happy to take suggestions from readers.

  3. Great closing note and here’s to wishing you a fantastic end to the year.

If it is not too much to ask for, will you be able to do an analysis on Vietnam – the economy, investing opportunities etc. Reason for this is although there has been much talk about China as the next big thing (they might already be), Vietnam could scale up at a similar rate in the next 10-20 years given their relatively young population, blossoming manufacturing industries etc.

    Cheers!

    • Thank you for the kind note, Happy 2019 to you too!

That’s an absolutely amazing suggestion. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Vietnam but never had the chance to take a closer look. I’ll definitely add this topic to my list of things to write on.

      Cheers!
