I get quite a lot of questions on good sources of investment content for US stocks.
Seeking Alpha is one of those platforms that I used in my earlier days.
I remember spending a lot of time trawling through Seeking Alpha to find ideas in the US stock space, and to understand how other investors in the market are viewing the same stocks that I was looking at.
So when Seeking Alpha reached out to me to ask if I was keen to do a review piece for them together with their Black Friday Promo, I was actually pretty keen to do so.

What is Seeking Alpha?
In simple English – Seeking Alpha is an investment research platform.
It’s a large investing community, where investors from all over the world can share their investment idea in the form of an article.
There’s 2 key features of Seeking Alpha:
- Stock Analysis and Research
- Portfolio Management Tools
Stock Analysis and Research
In my view – this is what Seeking Alpha is about.
The investment research.
They have over 16,000 active contributors providing data-driven stock analysis.
The professional editorial team vets all content before publication.
Here’s an example of what an article is like – this one covering AMD.
There’s a summary, following by expansion of the thesis, and the price target.
Basically think sell-side research from the banks, but from retail investors – with much more variety of opinions, and (potentially) much more objective.
And if you’re interested in a particular stock for example.
Going to the stock page will pull up all the analysis on the stock – and the opinions can be very diverse.
You can find research saying that the stock is a strong buy, a hold, or a sell.
This gives you access to a huge range of diverse opinions on the same stock.
And in my view this alone can be very helpful for beginner investors.
It helps you to understand all sides of the picture – and appreciate how 10 investors can see the same facts, and arrive at 10 different conclusions.
And of course, after reading all the diverse opinions, and finding out if there is anything that you missed in your analysis – hopefully you would be able to reach your own conclusion on your view on the stock.
Portfolio Management Tools
On top of that you also get access to the portfolio management tools that allows you to:
- Create and track custom portfolios
- Receive email alerts and push notifications
- Access to conference calls and presentations
Per Seeking Alpha, the 3 best portfolio tools are:
- Real time alerts – Once you add a stock to your Seeking Alpha portfolio, you will receive breaking news and analysis on that stock. You can also set up critical rating upgrade and downgrade alerts.
- Quant ratings (based on 5 key factors) – View stock ratings based on five key factors – Valuation, Growth, Profitability, Momentum and EPS Revisions. Each stock is graded against its sector, and the ratings are updated daily. You can quickly see where a stock is strong or weak, and with one click, you can view the underlying data and sector averages.
- Portfolio warnings – Seeking Alpha will notify you when the stocks you follow are at high risk of underperforming. Warnings are displayed at the bottom of your Seeking Alpha portfolio. You can click on the warning sign for a more detailed explanation.
My views on Seeking Alpha?
As shared as the start of the article – I have been an avid reader of Seeking Alpha over the past decade.
I find it useful to build up broad based investing knowledge quickly, and to get access to very diverse opinions and stock analysis.
But like all kinds of financial analysis.
Don’t treat it as the gospel truth.
Read it – but apply a critical mind to it.
Reflect on the author’s view, and decide for yourself whether you agree or disagree.
The beauty with an investment platform like Seeking Alpha is that you get a diverse range of opinions – both bull and bear thesis.
If you are a bull, it is very helpful to read the bear thesis and see if there is anything big that you are missing.
And vice bersa.
Read both, and decide which is more likely to play out in reality.
Because really, that’s the job of an investor – to evaluate a diverse set of information and opinions, and try to get as close to the objective truth as possible.
